Hello parents of GSL sophomores!

Students selling over 10 pizzas earn a free pizza!
Most of the proceeds go to class expenses like Prom (when they become juniors)

This is a reminder that if you have any transportation questions and/or needs, please contact Lizi Hennek by calling the bus garage at 320-864-3032 or emailing her at lizi@fourpointo.com. If you need anything from me, please reach out.

No school on March 1 for all students…..this is a full day off of school. The last day of the tri will be on February 29, 2024.

April 26, 2024, will be a half day for students. Dismissal will be at 12:00 noon….which means Lakeside will be at 11:45 AM.

Finally…..I just want to inform families that there was a situation yesterday afternoon in Silver Lake around the area of Hwy 7 and Grove Ave. where there was police and fire departments dispatched. Officers were investigating a potential burglary. The School District did get notified about this situation, but it wasn’t until after school was released and buses had left. We did bring students inside that were waiting for the later bus and/or walking home and parents were notified. All made it home safely. The incident turned out to be a false alarm.

Keeping all of your children and our staff safe on a daily basis is the top priority.

Thank you for being a part of GSL………..take care, Chris

GSL School Update February 14, 2024

Happy Valentines Day GSL……here is your GSL School Update for today, February 14, 2024. Lots of information in this update. As always, please ask if you have any questions.

Calendar changes for this school year. The State of Minnesota is requiring schools to implement reading training for staff. This training will last over the next couple of school years. In order to do this, the GSL School District needed to make some calendar adjustments. Please see below those changes for this school year and for next. Thank you for your flexibility with these days. I have attached the updated calendars in English and Spanish. You can also find this on our school website.
For the 2023-2024 school year (this school year)…March 1, 2024 will be a total day off for students…..and April 26, 2024 will be a dismissal at 12:00 noon.
2023-2024 Calendar Board Approved 2-12-2024.pdf
2023-2024 Spanish Calendar Board Approved 2-12-2024.pdf
Please see the latest calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. There are added half days in order to implement this training.
2024-2025 Calendar Board Approved 2-12-2024.pdf
2024-2025 Spanish Calendar Board Approved 2-12-2024.pdf
The new school calendar for the 2025-2026 school year will be approved at the March School Board Meeting.
Again, thank you for your flexibility. We are trying to preserve instructional time, implement this training, and watch our budget. These calendar changes attempt to balance this as best as possible. The School District understands that half days are challenging for some families with scheduling. Hopefully with communicating these changes, you will be able to plan. Thank you again.

Bus expectations. This is another reminder of our bus expectations while riding the school bus. Respectful behavior is the expectation at all times. Any inappropriate language, behavior and/or actions may result in losing the privilege to ride the school bus. I am asking students if they witness this type of behavior, to please inform their parents, and I ask our parents to send me an email explaining the situation. We will then investigate and take appropriate action.
Please know that the vast majority of our students at GSL show respect and are very well behaved. Thank you for that. This is why GSL is a great school, we have great students and staff! However, we recently had some examples of disrespectful behavior by a small number of students. This is not allowed. Be kind, be nice, and show respect to all.

After School Snack
On another note of something, “I don’t want to do……..” The after school snack program will be shut down from February 20-29…….we will open the program again on March 4 after school. The reason for this is the garbage that has been found in and around school. Wrappers, food, milk cartons, etc. etc. have even been found along our city streets. We can and will do better. I apologize for the inconvenience and to the many students that use this program for its intended purpose.

Girls on the Run…..please see the attachments on this program for more information that will be starting up in the beginning of April. If you have specific questions, you can reach out to Erin Sauter at sautererin@yahoo.com
GOTR English.jpg
GOTR Spanish.jpg
GOTR Dates.jpg

On a positive note……coming up next week……February 22, 2024 is GSL “GET TO” Day…..we are asking our students and staff to wear their GET TO shirts……during the day, we will be having random drawings for $10.00 gift cards that were donated by members of our GSL Community Schools group…..a simple way to say thank you to our students and staff for all of your hard work!! Thank you to the many organizations that have donated.

I really appreciate our families and the support you give to our schools. Thank you for being a part of GSL. Have a great day and the rest of your week. Go Panthers!! Chris

GSL School Update February 8, 2024

Hello GSL….here is your GSL School Update for February 8, 2024. Make it a great rest of your day and have a great Friday and weekend.

Reminder to all students while riding the bus. Respectful behavior and appropriate language is a must!! If students are not following these expectations, the privilege of riding the bus will be removed. Help other students out, be kind, make a new friend…..all positive and healthy interactions are expected on the bus. Riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. Be great kids!!

After school snack program…. We’ve recently experienced several examples of garbage that is coming from our after-school snack program. Garbage that is in school and/or on the sidewalk, bus, and streets in and around school. This needs to be improved or the snack program will be shut down. Sadly, many/most of our students utilize this program correctly and will get penalized if this program is shut down. Let’s all do our part GSL!!

GSL School Update February 1, 2024

Here is your GSL School Update for February 1, 2024. It is hard to believe that January is over. While some days may go slow, the months and the years certainly go fast! Enjoy the warm temperatures!!

The water line in the City of Silver Lake has been fixed and all is well with water at Lakeside Elementary.

Reminder to all students while riding the bus. Respectful behavior and appropriate language is a must!! If students are not following these expectations, the privilege of riding the bus will be removed.

There has been a few days, especially in the morning, that we’ve dealt with fog. Please see the information below from the TZD coalition. Good information.

Most drivers know that it can be dangerous to drive in fog without your headlights on, but did you know it is also illegal? For your safety and to help other drivers see you, Minnesota law says every vehicle on the road shall display lighted headlamps and lighted tail lamps when visibility is impaired by weather or insufficient light. This includes rain, snow, sleet, hail, and fog.

Drivers might assume that sensors will activate all the vehicle’s lights in reduced visibilities, but that is not always the case with precipitation and fog – especially during daylight hours. Automatic headlight sensors detect how much light is outside. Sometimes during heavy rain, snow or fog, the sensor still detects light, so it won’t automatically turn on. This is why it’s important to consult your owner’s manual and learn how to turn your lights on manually.

In addition to manually turning your headlights on, follow these tips to keep yourself and others safe on the road during low visibility.
• Eliminate all distractions.
• Slow down. The faster you are traveling, the longer it takes to stop.
• Follow the 3-second-plus following distance rule. Watch the vehicle in front of you. When that vehicle passes an object such as a sign, count three seconds. You should not reach that sign before you count to three. If you do, you are following too close! In some cases such as inclement weather or slick roads, you may need to allow six, seven seconds (or even more) to be safe.

Seeing and being seen can help reduce your chances of getting in a crash. If there’s any kind of precipitation, double check that your vehicle’s headlights, taillights, and marker lights are shining before heading out on the road. Together, we can drive Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths.
